REINSTALL=[Feature List] ??

G

Gerry Hickman

Hi,

If you patch an Administrative Installation Point, you must then do "recache
and reinstall" of the affected feature to the client. In order to do this
requires a property assignment on the MSI command line e.g.
REINSTAL=WORDFiles will re-install Word.

The problem I'm having is finding a definitive document that explains the
syntax for this command and a cross-reference to the acceptable parameters
for Office 2003.

There's a spreadsheet in the Office 2003 resource kit called FILELIST.XLS
which does list files and associated features, but the syntax they use in
that file is not compatible with the REINSTALL= property. They show the
features separated by backslashes, and I think they're in reverse order.

I'm trying to find out how to update clients with this update

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;885828#XSLTH4203121124120121120120

It only replaced two tiny DLLs, but it looks as though you have to recache
and re-install the WHOLE of Office 2003 in order to update the clients from
an AIP!

Towards the end of the article, it gives some examples of the REINSTALL=
property, but it does not actually state which one is the CORRECT one to
use!

Any Ideas?

Hi Gerry,

Is your concern only for this update or for
using the Settings INI file for Office and the
Feature list choice?

For the update you mentioned
KB885828 (http://support.microsoft.com//kb/885828)
the values you can use in lieu of Reinstall=All
for that update are listed in that article.
You could use any or all of them depending on
how you originally deployed Office and the related
Office family product apps.

If you're recaching after updating the Admin point,
rather than using one of the other update strategies at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011402381033.aspx
then it's not clear from your scenario where you'd
want to use a REINSTALL= property with a setting other than 'All'.

This page has a discussion on how to use Setup property
values
http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/assistance/HA011513661033.aspx

If you've created an MST that was used in the deployment you
can use the MST Viewer from the Offie Resource Kit. It will
list the features that were selected for install.
