Reinstall Office 2003

I am experiencing difficulties with Office 2003 on Windows XP Pro SP2, and am
considering using the “reinstall†option described in Microsoft Article ID
821593 (Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Microsoft Office 2003,
Change, Reinstall Office).

I have not done a reinstall of Office 2003 previously. What "words of
wisdom" can you offer? For example, are there any files or registry settings
that I should backup prior to this operation?

Thank you for your assistance.

A problem has only recently appeared on my Windows XP Pro SP2 PC. Opening a
local Microsoft Office 2003 document by clicking on the file name displayed
within Windows Explorer now results in about a 45 second delay before the
application is launched and the document is loaded. However, if the Office
application is invoked directly (through the Start -> All Programs menu), it
starts promptly; and if the document is then selected from within it (using
File -> Open), it opens instantly. The behavior occurs for Word 2003, Excel
2003 and PowerPoint 2003 files, but not for any other file type (e.g., .PDF).

Additional background:
* There is no malware on the machine (as reported by Norton Internet
Security 2006, Webroot Spy Sweeper 5.0, Ad-Aware SE Professional, SpyBot, and
RootkitRevealer).
* The PC is not joined to a network.
* Running “CHKDSK /R†and "sfc /scannow" did not reveal any problems.
* Running "winword /unregserver" followed by "winword /regserver" (and the
same for "excel" and "powerpnt") has not corrected the problem.
* Running "Detect and Repair" on the Help Menu from Excel did not correct
the problem.
* Running "Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Microsoft Office
2003, Change, Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation" did not
correct the problem.

What can you recommend to solve the problem?

Thank you for your assistance.

Did you get your problem solved? I have a slightly different problem. I
can't launch my Access program. I have Office 2003 Pro and I run XP SP2.
The other Office programs are ok. I tried the repair option with Office but
got the message under the Windows Installer heading, The installation source
for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that
you can access it..

I'm hesitant to uninstall the Office program and reinstall, for fear of
being unable to reinstall for the same reason I can't do the repair. Then I
will be without Word, Excel, etc. besides Access.

Any comments would be helpful.

Randall, I am continuing to troubleshoot this problem, and don't have a
solution yet. If I identify a solution, I will certainly post the results in
this thread (and I hope you will do likewise.)

The root source of the problems I encountered is the installation of a new
sound card driver. Reverting to the original driver solved the difficulties.
