Reinstall Office XP problem

I have a very urgent problem trying to reinstall Office XP. MS Outlook is my
email program. I uninstalled using Wndows Install Clean Up. I had problems
with the normal add/remove programs, which seems to be related. I receive
"Error 1317. An error occurred while attempting to create or write to
directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10".

I believe the error is a result of permissions or ownership. I am running XP
Home Edition SP2. I recently changed permission & ownership in the safe mode
because I had to uninstall and reinstall Norton 360. I had installed Norton
360 as the Administrator and then created a new user with administrator
rights. I had to change ownership to the new user to cleanly uninstall Norton
360. Is this related to my current problem? I did notice that when I was
changing the ownership, the process stopped at the \Program Files directory,
and I had to respond to a question about existing ownership, I believe, to
continue.

I would appreciate help as soon as possible. Thank you.

For anyone who might have a similar problem, I solved it by adding Everyone
and/or Administrators to the permissions of the Program Files directory. For
some reason I had lost these groups. The only group or username was myself.
I have no idea why. Can anybody help me understand this?
