reinstalled Office, same insta-quit problem

Version: v.X
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

Yesterday my Office documents and apps starting quitting instantly upon opening them.

I tried all the recommendations on these two troubleshooting sites:

<http://word.mvps.org/Mac/TroubleshootingIndex.html>

<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887298/en-us?spid=2490&sid=216>

Finally, I tried a reinstall. The only progress --which happened before the reinstall--is that now I can open documents (and create new ones once I've opened the programs that way). But when I click directly on the app, either in the dock or the apps folder, I get the instant-quit.

Any more thoughts? I've exhausted the options I can find. My situation is now at least workable, but still pretty sub-optimal.

Create a new, "pristine" user file, log in as the new user, and try running
the apps from there. If they run properly, then the problem is in your user
file and from my limited experience is either a corrupt preference file or a
corrupt "font cache". I've resolved a similar problem that crops up the odd
time with a program called Font Finagler which you can get from MacUpdate or
Versiontracker.com.

Having re-installed have you also applied the update for Office X (I believe
it's 10.1.9)? Reinstalling sets you back to 10.0.0, which causes permissions
issues & gets things "out of sync". Get Office updated, repair disk
permissions & restart your Mac, then see if anything improves.

I created a new user; same problem. Also ran Font Finagler, but I'm still where I was. (Can open existing documents in Office, but cannot open the applications directly.)

I did update Office X and also repeated most of what I did the first time around while troubleshooting: checked and repaired permissions, did a "clean restart," ran all Onyx scripts. (And now, thanks to the other advice I got, I've run Font Finagler.)
I'm still where I was--Office is usable if I open an existing doc, but I can't open the app directly.

Well, let's go back to your first post...

It's a bit difficult to know exactly what you've tried - The one link you
cited is a KB article that pertains to Office 2004 & 2008, not to Office X
and the other link is for the general troubleshooting page on the MVP site.

Did you run the Remove Office utility before reinstalling, did you drag any
Office files to the Trash, or did you just reinstall over the existing
installation?

Have you removed/renamed the Normal template as described here:

http://word.mvps.org/mac/MacWordNormal.html

You also haven't made mention of testing the preference files as described
on the same site at:

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DamagedPrefs.html

Those files don't get touched if you install without doing an appropriate
removal first - and "may" not get replaced even if you do.

Sorry for the lack of specificity. I tried everything under "The Basics" and "General Troubleshooting" on the "Troubleshooting Word: Mac" page that I linked to

That includes checking the Normal template and the preference files, and running the "Remove Office" utility before reinstalling.

(Now, I have not re-tested the preference files, or re-tested Normal since re-installing Office, because I assumed that would be redundant.)
