Reinstalled Windows XP now Outlook cannot access emails

I recently had to reinstall Windows XP and as such had to reinstall MS Office
including Outlook 2003. I have tried to set up my email account again but
when I click on "email accounts" under the tools menu I get the error
message:

"The operation failed due to a registry or installation problem. Restart
Outlook and try again. If the problem persists please reinstall". So I cannot
even begin to reset my email account (it is a BTInternet account).

I've tried restating and reinstalling and of course the same problem happens
all over again. Any ideas gratefully received because I'm fed up with having
to look at the Internet to get my emails.

Many thanks, and have a lovely Christmas.

Assuming youve run an Outllook, or Office repair using the cd;
Use the mail icon in the Control Panel to create a new Profile, add the mail
account and a new data file and test

Many thanks for your response but I'm still having trouble!

When I set up the profile an error message appears saying "There was an
error accessing your system registry". I click OK and the new profile seems
to appear. Then I click on Properties under my new profile to set up an email
account the Mail set up window appears. I click on email accounts and nothing
happens. It's like a pretend button. I can keep clicking it forever but
nothing happens.

I'm guessing there is a problem with the registry but since I am no computer
expert I have no idea what that means.

Any further ideas much appreciated!

Cheers

Perhaps we had better start at the beginning.
Why did you have to reinstall winxp?
Was this a clean install or a repair installation?

I reinstalled because I was having no end of problems with hardware. i.e
Windows would not recognise memory sticks and kept asking me to install
drivers. The Found New Hardware wizard would pop up everytime I turned on my
printer or plugged in an external hard drive. In light of no other solutions,
reinstallation of Windows seemed like the only option and for 99% of the
issues it has worked.

But it has thrown up this issue with Outlook which I must say was the last
thing I was expecting.

I believe it was a clean install in that it overwrote the original copy of
winXP that was on my PC. I tried a repair installation first but that failed
right at the end of the installation process.

Thanks for your continued support & if I don't hear from you before have a
nice Christmas.

Kind Rgds

If the installation overwrote the origonal installation then that was a
repair installation and as such it appears not to have worked.
see this link for either how to clean install, or how to repair install

Winxp doesnt give the type of hw issues you had, unless there is either a
problem with corrupt win files or problomatic hw
You might also be advised to visit your hd manufacturers site and download &
create the bootable hd checking utility.
You might also want to visit www.memtest.org and create the bootable memory
