my computer and more specifically my office crashed yesterday and i had to do
a complete reformat - new install... before i did that though i was able to
manually go into my local settings and copy the outlook dat file... ive since
reformatted my laptop and reinstalled my office ( office xp 2003 pro )... i
did go into my outlook once eveything was set up and set up my email account
to pull from the pst file... for some reason i have 2 personal folders in my
outllook now... and it dsnt recognize any of my contacts from my address book
( still able to send email by going to the actual contact in my contact
folder ) did i go about this the wrong way since i couldnt back up the data
yesterday... i actually went in before i installed office and created the
outlook folder within microsoft inside of the application folder- im hoping
this makes sense- i apologize if im rambling...
please help...
thanks
trey
note---after i installed outlook although i had dropped in my outlook dat
file it created another dat file ( outlook dat1 ) i manually deleted it in
hopes it would then only pick up this one...

You mean outlook.pst?

Create a new profile (do not copy it);
Control Panel-> Mail-> button Show Profiles

To access your current pst-file in the new profile;
File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...

To set it as the default delivery location;
Tools-> E-mail Accounts...-> button Next-> use the dropdownlist below

I have a similiar problem. For reasons I won't get into, I lost my profiles.
There is one that comes up called "test" (blank) from a year ago when I had
a similiar situation. I found the old (current) ones in data managment but
don't know how to move it all back to the Outlook Program (v2002). There are
a lot of filessaved there with names like: "contacts", personal folders 1, 2,
3 and others I can't remember the names of. I think I know which one to
copy/move but am unsure of the ones like "contacts". Will the one personal
folder file contain everything I need? Can I use the directions you gave to
trey to recover my profile? I'm going to try - not sure if I understand them
all, tho.
