Reinstalling Office X After a HD Failure

R

Rodney Dixon

My HD had a catastrophic failure and I had to replace it. Now I am trying to
reinstall Office X from the most recent upgrade disk (I've purchased every
upgrade for as long as I have been using Office) and the software is looking
for the older version for upgrade verification.

I've systematically "browsed" to the CDs from every earlier verion I have, but
the verification is not accepted. Suggestions?

Did you select the actual Microsoft Office application folder on the
Office 98 or Office 2001 CD? (I don't think the Office X upgrade
installer accepts anything earlier than Office 98 as the prior version.)

Thank you for replying. I did browse to the application folder on Office
98. Can't seem to find a CD for 2001. I get the following error
message:
"The Upgrade Cannot be Verified..."

Now what?

It seems my office 98 disk is an upgrade from the previous Office
Standard edition which was an upgrade from whatever preceded it.
The original copy of office I had was on floppy discs... a big stack of
them.

Hereunder is Eric Olson's recent reply to a quite similar
question. Does it help you out of it?

The following Microsoft Knowledgebase article should help
to resolve this issue:

313286.MacOFFX: "Upgrade Verification" Message When You
Start an Office v. X
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;
[LN];313286

The most important point is the last paragraph:

"After you select the appropriate folder, click Choose.
The installation should continue without error.
DO NOT SELECT THE CD-ROM ITSELF OR ANY OF THE SUBFOLDERS
IN THE APPROPRIATE MICROSOFT OFFICE FOLDER

NOTE: Doing this may cause Setup to fail when you confirm
the upgrade status of the earlier version."

So, when verifying the upgrade, choose the Microsoft
Office 98 folder on your Office 98 CD, not any of the
subfolders and not simply the CD itself.

I appreciate the attempts to help, but I am doing what the article
suggests. I am browsing to the CD and selecting the "Microsoft Office
98" folder. The one with the application icon on it and still get the
error message cited below.

There was a special upgrade from 2001 only that Microsoft sold for $149
for just a few months after Office X was released. The standard upgrade
offer was from Office 98 or 2001 and cost $239. If you can't find your
2001 CD, you'll probably need to call Microsoft to get a replacement
upgrade key.
