Reinstalling Office

A

Annette R.

I use Windows XP and Office 2000. Lately, my computer
has been running very sluggish, and has occasional
crashes and other erratic behavior. My hard drive was
very full, so a couple of months ago I deleted a lot of
stuff and ran a defrag. Now my concern is that I might
have deleted some files that are necessary for Windows to
function properly.

I have my Windows XP disk, but I lost my Office 2000
disks some time ago. Today I purchased the upgrade
version of Office Small Business Edition 2003. I haven't
yet installed it, because I believe it will remove my
older 2000 edition from my computer.

Should I decide to reformat, I believe I will need to
reinstall the full 2000 version before the 2003 update,
correct? But without the full 2000 version, I won't be
able to do this.

Any suggestions? I just can't afford to purchase the
full version right now.

Hi Annette,

If you did not deleted anything in directories 'c:\Windows' or 'c:\Program
Files'
there is hardly any change that you removed essential files for Windows or
Office.
Your problems sound a bit hardware related but better try this first.

You can repair Windows while maintaining all installed programs and settings
by running the WinXP Setup from CD again. Choose Setup XP on the current
Windows drive (mostly C:). BEFORE doing so, you better free some harddrive
space.
Run Disk Clean Up and de-select the items you want tot keep.
Internet Temporary Files can be safely deleted. Also consider here to delete
all except the most recent system restore points in tab Advanced - System
Restore.
The latter may free 1...3 GB on your harddrive.

If I remember correctly there is a Repair or Re-install option on the Office
CD as well.
You may need to ask someone for a copy.

Hope this helps,
John7
