relative links, pt II

Doug

As an aside, I'm still trying to understand the purpose of
this newsgroup. 510 pages of information, and no search
function? If my question was dealt with before, I'd have
no way of knowing it. Is the purpose of thiis NG to answer
the same questions over and over...? :) I do see that
many questions get answered; a round of applause for the
folks who are so helpful!

I've now discovered two glitches in the graphics link
capabilities of Word. The first, well, you'll have to go
searching for it.... The second is that, upon opening an
HTM document in Word, and then saving it as a DOC, Word
converts all graphics to absolute links. Which is
absolutely crazy. I see no way to control this activity,
or to reverse it. Upon converting the doc back to htm, the
page no longer works on the internet - only on my computer!

TIA...
Doug

Not really ;-)

It really should be the last line of defence against the forces of chaos...

The first line of defence is the Word help. The second and third should be
searches of the newsgroup archives
(http://www.google.com/advanced_group_search -- specify
"microsoft.public.word.*" for the newsgroups you want to search) and
Microsoft's websites
(http://search.microsoft.com/search/search.aspx?View=en-us&st=a).
You can also check out (and search) the Word MVPs FAQs at
http://www.mvps.org/word/

Perhaps the next version of the web interface you are using will support a
search. But this web thingie is still in development, and for the time
being, you'd be probably better off to use a newsreader for Usenet.
If you have OE installed already, paste news://news.microsoft.com into your
browser. That should start OE, and you can click on "Newsgroups" to see a
list of available groups, including this one.
In OE, you can search all messages that you have downloaded (and those that
you have sent, too).

As to your question...
<snip> The second is that, upon opening an

Word converts all graphics to absolute links. Which is
absolutely crazy. I see no way to control this activity,

I don't have much experience with that, but does unchecking "Tools >
Options ("General" tab) > Web Options ("Files" tab) > Update links on save"
help?
There is also "Options.UpdateLinksAtOpen" in VBA, but I don't see how you
can change that from the user interface.

Klaus

Hi Doug

I'm not sure about a search engine cos once the messages are downloaded into
your Newsgroup program (Outlook Express for most of us), you do have some
(although limited) search capabilities.

I agree though that when someone asks a question for the umpteenth time, we
should show patience cos the person may well have just joined the group and
hasn't downloaded many messages.

Do I get my round of applause????

The real problem is when the same person asks the same question over and
over without, apparently, seeing any of the answers. <g>

Ooops - I hope that isn't a reference to me :)

I was accessing this NG from the MS web site. Thanks for
letting me know that it can be accessed from Outlook
Express - I'll give that a try and see if I can find any
relevant posts from the past...

Nope - I tried that already.
That "Options.UpdateLinksAtOpen" in VBA sounds promising,
but if there's no way to change it, then, as I say, that's
crazy...

The way Word is put together now, the best way to author
web pages is in DOC format; it is much less buggy than
editing an htm document, and it's easier to export
to "compact html" from a .doc, since it doesn't try to
overwrite a "noncompact" htm file in the same directory.
It would (IMHO) behoove Microsoft to make it EASY to move
a document between the two formats...

Thanks for the ideas...
Doug

I had an inspiration earlier this evening, though I haven't had a chance to
test it yet. I wondered what Word would/could do if I locked the HYPERLINK
fields (Ctrl+F11).
