Relative links...

Mike

Hi again everyone,

Another newbie question I'm sure, but I can't find an answer on the forum
anywhere.

In FP2003, is it possible to tell FP to treat all links as relative links?
Is there a setting, a checkbox, something in the application to do this?

I say this because when I open my site in FP and assign a link, it's
creating an absolute link. I understand that when I publish the file, it's
SUPPOSED to change those to relative links, but it isn't. I have to manually
go in and retype the hyperlinks to their relative positions (e.g., change
"c:\some_web\some_folder\somefile.htm" to "some_folder\somefile.htm") and
THEN publish for it to work correctly.

I'm wondering if maybe I missed a setting in my site setup somewhere? I
can't find anything along the lines of "make all links relative". Am I wrong
in thinking this should be the default behavior?

My site (on an intranet) has a LOT of links. Manually entering these things
each time is going to be a real PITA.

BTW, the problem doesn't seem to exist for images...only pages in the web.

TIA for any and all input/help!

Hi,

Dont think there is a setting. I suspect it is the manner in which the
links are being created. Do you use the hyperlink button / menu item and
then select the file within the site or do you select the file using the
external file button (looks like a folder) ?

Hi P

Actually, I right-click on the highlighted item and choose "hyperlink" from
the context menu. Then I browse to the file I want. Since we have many files
and many layers, I can't remember all of the locations! LOL

Does this answer your question?

You must have a web / site open, File Menu | Open Web / Site and then create or import all content
in to the open web prior to working with it, then FP will create all links as relative.

Ok - Same difference, how are you browsing ? Is it the standard file select
/ open dialog and you find the file "within" your site or do you go looking
outside the site folder ?

If you are inside then I dont know the resolution but if you are going
outside the site folders this is the problem and the files do need to be
inside the site i.e. under the root folder for relative addressing.

I've never seen this problem and one of the sites I do has over 20,000
pages... mostly links to pdf and word docs. Have you tried recalculate
hyperlinks ?
