Remaining work not = sum of future time phased work

The remaining work for a task or a rollup does not equal the sum of the
future work in the time phased grid. After statusing a task (or the entire
project), we use the Update Project function to push the remaining work after
the status date. The status date does not fall on the calendar month end but
rather on a Friday of the fiscal month. The result is that the sum of the
weekly time phased work does not equal the Remaining Work total that is
displayed in the Task Remaining Work column. This means that the sum of the
detail does not equal the total.

My question is: What can be done to resolve the problem that the total
Remaining Work does not equal the detail of the time phased Remaining Work?
Surely this can't be the expected outcome!

Hello ProjectWoman:

Where specifically are you seeing the value "time phased remaining
work". If I view the project summary task timephased work and
subtract the timephased actual work it equals the remaining work for
the project as shown in the Remaining work field in the Work table.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no field in either Project 2003
or Project 2007 which specifically shows timephased remaining
ork. -- I'm more than willing to be proven wrong however :) Is this
a field in PWA?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

After selecting Tools / Tracking / Update Project to push the remaining Work
past the selected date (the status date, in this case), I expected the value
of the Remaining Work column to equal the sum of the Work in the future in
the time phased grid. However, there are some cases where there is Actual
Work in the future and Work-without-matching-Actual-Work (i.e., remaining
work) in the past. Thus, the value in Remaining Work does not equal the
remaining Work in the future. Maybe this is convoluted, but it is the case
that is occurring - and I don't see how to correct it at this point.

Thank you for the clarification. What version of Project (including
service pack) are you using? What options have you selected on the
Calculation tab of Tools > Options -- specifically:
"Move end of completed parts after status date back to status date"
and
"Move start of remaining parts before status date forward to status
date"

As you note, there should not be actual work in the future, nor should
there be remaining work in the past.

We have both of those options selected. Additionally, we executed "Update
Project" for the entire project to move remaining work forward of the status
date. Not all in-progress tasks have one of the problems, but I can't
identify commonality among the ones with a problem.

If you select the task that is not cooperating, can you update just
that single task and move the remaining work? What version of Project
including service pack?
