Remembering passwords and multiple profiles

David Trimboli

I've just started encountering something I haven't seen before. There
are two users with Windows XP SP3 and Outlook 2003 SP3 connecting to
mailboxes on Exchange 2003. Normally, our users connect to the mailbox
associated with their login account, and no authentication is necessary.
Sometimes, however, a user needs access to another mailbox, and I set up
a second Outlook profile and let it prompt them to choose a profile. The
second mailbox requires authentication because it is associated with a
different user account, so it prompts for a user name and password. We
supply this and tell it to memorize the password, and the user gets the
second account's e-mail. All well and good.

However, the next time the user chooses his own mailbox again, Outlook
wants a new user name and password. It isn't using the login credentials
anymore. If we supply the user name and password, and tell the box to
remember the password, the user gets into his mail. But the next time he
tries to open the *second* account's mail, it asks for a password again.

In other words, Outlook can only memorize one user name and password at
a time, regardless of whether it's the user's own associated mailbox. It
remembers the last entered credentials only.

I've tried creating entirely new profiles, with no effect. The fact that
this has happened twice in a row now with different users using
different computers makes me worried that a recent Windows Update has
changed something (I know there was a recent update concerned with
strengthening authentication methods...) I've also tried Method 3 in
Micosoft Support article KB290684 with no change (and the article
doesn't specifically address Exchange connections).

Can anyone advise me?

IIRC; that's normal behavior.

Instead of supplying additional credentials to the user, why not give that
user permissions on the AD object that holds this extra mailbox? You can do
this via the Security tab in AD U&C.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have implemented the change, and am waiting
for the user to get back to me with whether it worked or not.
