reminder when Office isn't running

I've entered some appointments into Office 2003's calendar, and set
reminders. The reminders only go off if Office is open at the designated
time. Is there a way to have the reminders go off if Office isn't running?

Office must be open / running to remind you to check your Office
appointments...

Oh, well, it would be a good feature if it could remind you when you don't
have it up (or minimized), sort of like virus checkers, etc that run with
icons in the lower right. And there is no way to make it do that, right?

Jud McCranie,
To date, no...
Personally, would rather have Office open and running and close out easily
when I don't want to be reminded, to have some time off for other things...

use the Office Online web based newsreader here:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx
In Office System 2003 applications:
Help/Assistance Pane/open Communities

There are third party solutions that do this quite nicely, some free:

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Jud McCranie asked:

If it was an icon down in the tray, you'd be able to right click and turn it
off.
