Reminders in Outlook 2003

Is there a way to have reminders pop up even though Outlook is not running?
MS Works Calendar does that, it seems odd that the flagship program
wouldn't. Is there a setting that needs tweeking?

The closest that I know of to this is setting Outlook to minimize to the Task Bar. If you right click on the small Outlook icon that stays in the taskbar, you can select "Hide when minimized."
Pro. You will get your meeting reminders.
Con. Outlook stays loaded in memory (Which isn't a problem if you have enough RAM)

Outlook must be open to fire reminders - however, there are programs that
will keep a stub of Outlook open to do just that - look here for some
suggestions:

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After searching google.groups.com and finding no answer, Bob asked:
