Reminders without opening Outlook?

How can I be reminded of appointments without opening Outlook? I'd like a
program that will remind me to check my reminders! I'm using Microsoft Office
XP.

Outlook must be open to fire reminders. There are some programs that will
open a stub of Outlook to get your reminders - see this page for some
