The stability of images in W2k7 brings back memories of W97, but
unfortunately the old workarounds don’t seem to apply. I’ve tried putting
images into textboxes – this used to work in W97 – and when you change the
word wrapping around the outside of the box it flies off to an random
position for no apparent reason. I’ve tried putting images into tables –
never needed to do this in W97, but I have used this as a way of keeping text
and image nicely aligned in W2k – and the table flies off to some random
place as and when it chooses.
All of this is incredibility frustrating as I can remember the relief I felt
when W2k came out and images stayed where you put them, something that users
of W2k7 have to look forward to.
But I think I might have found a workaround. Images seem to misbehave when
the text is going from one page to a new one – you know how Word always puts
at least two lines of text on a new page – so I’ve started putting a load of
blank lines – returns – in front of where I’m typing. This seems to have
calmed the matter down a bit.
I think Ms were trying to be a bit too bold with introducing a new files
format XPS and a new UI – ribbon. The ribbon has potential, but it is too
dictorial, namely, it doesn’t allow individual users to use Word in their own
individual way. This can be overcome. And the new file format is just buggy.
As a user I can’t figure out why MS goes backward forward going forward,
possibly it is its HR policy of always have new faces come into the
organisation and not keeping the old experienced hands.
