How about using a thumbdrive carying the onenote files
from computer to computer? Can I do it and what setup is
required?

Just copy the files over, like you would any other files.

Sure, you can do it. I did for a long time. Just have to put your .ONE
files on the thumbdrive and point OneNote to them.
