I received a word document that has a picture in it. I would like to remove
this picture and save it in an image format such as jpg, tif, bmp. How can I
do this?

Hi,

it's in cases like this one where it's really useful to know which version
of Word is being used. Word 2004 has a very useful command, "Save as
picture", which you can access by ctrl-/right-clicking the picture. This
will save the picture as a PNG file. If you use an earlier version of Word,
select the picture, copy it, then open Preview and click on File>New from
Clipboard. The copied picture will then open, and you will need to save it
using the File>Save command.

Since you don't mention anything to the contrary and this is the Mac Word
forum I'm going to assume you're using Word 2004 on the Macintosh.
Control-Click the picture & choose the Save As Picture command, name it,
pick a location & format, click Save.

I posted my question in the wrong place. I'm using Word 2000 for Windows on
a PC. Any help on this?

Hi Archie:

1) Display the picture in Word

2) Right-click and choose Format>Picture...

3) Set the Size to 100 per cent (this is important...)

4) Copy the picture

5) Start Microsoft Photo Editor (it's part of the Microsoft Office package:
you will find it among the accessories in the Microsoft Office programs
folder. If it's not there, install it from the CD using Add/Remove
Programs.

6) Use File>New from clipboard in Microsoft Photo Editor to create a new
picture.

7) Choose a graphics file type and save as normal.

It is important to use Microsoft Photo Editor for this operation, because it
is one of the very few applications that can read the picture dimensions
settings from the Word clipboard correctly. Other applications will
re-factor the picture because they get the size wrong, causing a very
pixelated, blocky result. If you have a high-end graphics application such
as Corel PhotoPAINT or Adobe PhotoShop that can also get picures out of Word
cleanly, but other cheaper applications probably can't :)

Cheers

Thanks to all of you who replied. I did as one of you suggested, and got a
solution on the PC location. Also, another one from John McGhie here.
