Never mind. I found the answer:
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, point to
Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office 2003 Language
Settings. Remove all asian languages. Also in Word 2003 from
Tools-Options-View uncheck text boundaries
Which is to say, if you want to be able to type in Chinese-Japanese-
Korean, you're "stuck with" the corner markers. I find them very
useful, and less intrusive than text boundaries.
