Have you checked both your Word keyboard shortcuts and your system
keyboard shortcuts.

CMD-OPT-<minus> works for me, giving a large "-" cursor and removing any
menu item.

Hi Matt,

I had the same problem once and it turned out I was hitting the wrong minus.
Only trouble is I can't remember which one was correct :). So try both the
minus that's on the number pad and the minus that's actually a hyphen on the
regular keyboard. One of those should work.

It didn't (and doesn't) work for me either, and I've tried the minus
on the number pad and the hyphen on the regular keyboard.

Yup, I finally got it by changing the shortcut to something else. It
still didn't work very well, but it worked well enough for me to clear
the documents from the Word menu. It looks like this feature is kind of
broken, though; I guess the Recent Files thing is supposed to replace
it...

Once again, I can't reproduce this - CMD-OPT-<minus> works every time
for me. Does the keyboard shortcut work if you rename Normal (with Word
closed, of course), then restart it?

That's okay; I know why you can't reproduce it. m.

I am guessing that if you press command-option-8 once (on Panther),
command-option-minus in Word will stop working. This is because it's in
use as a system-level hot key. See the Universal Access pref pane. m.

Thanks! I've never used that shortcut before. It may come in very useful
(I'm helping some of my website clients to become compliant with
accessibility standards).

This seems like an Apple bug to me - unless the CMD-OPT-<minus> shortcut
is forbidden to OSX applications, there should be some indication,
preferably on the screen, when the UA shortcuts are in effect. As it is
now, it's entirely possible to inadvertently hit CMD-OPT-8 and lose
control of other shortcuts.
