remove items from toolbar menu

using word 2002 on new dell e521 dell desktop vista home premium.

on the toolbars drop down menu there are 3 items listed that i would like
removed, without deleting them from the program.
"extended formatting", "function key display" & "japanese greetings".
they are not checked under the options in view>toolbars>options.

is there a way to remove them from the drop down toolbar?

Be Really careful doing this. Use Ctrl + Alt + - (the - on the Num Pad). The
cursor will grow into a thick black larger than life - sign. Hover it over a
menu which will cause the menu to drop down, then move it over the item you
want to remove and click. You have to do this carefully as whilst the cursor
is in the mode, it will permanently delete anything you click on.

thank you for reply.

i understand that the ctl+alt+- will cause curser change. how do you change
it back?

if i delete the "japanese greetings" for example, is there a way to put it
back later?

i have same word 2002 at work, & the 3 items i listed do not show there.

i thought there was a way to do it in the toolbar's option panel.

i may just leave all alone, but i'll wait to hear back.

To exit the delete mode, just press Escape. To restore the menus,
right-click on a Toolbar and select Customize. You can press the RESET
button and it will restore all menus back to the default. You can also edit
the menus whilst Customize dialog is open by using the mouse to open and
drag off the items unwanted and dropping them into empty space. Or to put
them back individually, find the menu item in the list and drag and drop it
onto a menu.

These options are present because you have support for East Asian languages
enabled; see “Margin marks or crop marks appear on each corner of the page
when you open a document in Word 2002 or in Word 2003” at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=839371 for instructions for disabling it.

thank you for reply. i did have asian languages which i sucessfully removed
in a previous post. after reading kb839371, & following the directions, i
removed many other languages. opened word. still have the 3 items:
"extended formatting", "function key display" & "japanese greetings" showing
on the toolbar's drop down menu.

how about a simple uninstall & reinstall? office trial 2003 was on machine
when i installed the word 2002. i hadn't activated the 2003 office trial
because i intended to use my word 2002. it was after the install i noticed
asain related items. i uninstalled the trial version of office 2003. then,
as per this group, used language settings tools to remove all references of
asian & all was back normal, so i thought. i'm comparing this to 2 other
machines with word 2002's which doesn't show those 3 items.

i thought this was a matter of a simple toggle on/off setting. i can use
program as is. no other problems so far.

any other input greatly appreciated, & thank you for replying!

If you have already disabled the languages, then you should be able to drag
the menu items off with Tools | Customize open. Be sure to save Normal.dot
when you quit Word, and they should not reappear.

thanks you again! i'm having problem understanding the drag the menu items
off.

with customoze open, i go to view>toolbars, & from there the toolbars menu
doesn't open. i must not be following this process too well. could you get
me started with a step by step for the beginning?

Display the toolbar in question before opening the Customize dialog, then
use Tools | Customize to open the Customize dialog. With the dialog open,
hover the mouse over the toolbar to open the menu, then select each
undesired menu entry with the mouse and drag it off the menu. You can also
use the Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen method to remove the menu items individually without
opening the Customize dialog. That shortcut is "used up" after each use, so
you'll have to press Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen repeatedly to reinvoke it, which is why
I suggested opening the Customize dialog instead.

BTW, which toolbar is this menu on?

the 3 toolbars in question, "extended formatting", "function key display" &
"japanese greetings"
are on the view>toolbars menu.

i displayed the japanese greetings tool bar in word ( view>toolbars>japanese
greetings). i opened the custom dialog box with that toolbar opened.
hovering the mouse did not open anything on the japanese greetings toolbar,
however there is a drop down arrow & an "x" to close. i engaged the drop
down menu, & yes, items could be dragged off, or just right click the item
listed & select delete. this removes the submenus of the japanese greeting's
tool bar, but not the japanese greetings off the main tool bar view.

if i have the submenus of toolbars opened , (under view), or the drop down
menu opened in the japanese greetings tool bar, as soon as i press the ctl
alt, the menus disappear, so i can't ctl+alt+-, hover & delete.

i'm not trying to delete any submenus of the japanese & the 2 other tool
bars, i'm trying to remove the entire japanese greetings & other 2 off the
view>toolbars menu, so when the view>toolbars' drop down menu shows, it's
not there. (same as my other word 2002 machines).

i really appreciate you helping me with this. can you provide further help
with this new info?

If you've disabled support for all Asian languages, I wouldn't think these
toolbars would still be installed. They are not on my Toolbars menu. I do
have them listed (but not checked) on the Toolbars tab in Tools | Customize.
You might make sure that they are not checked there.

all 3 items are unchecked in the options box.

so far, word is operating fine. i'm a basic user. all the asian languages,
and many others were installed from the start. only determined by the
installation & running of the language settings tool.

i can use as is, & probably will, or i'll uninstall/reinstall. just thought
it was a simple setting.
