Remove MSDE

I am trying to delete MSDE that i loaded using Office 2000. However, I get the message that it is in use
I've tried various things, but still get the message "MSDE is in use and cannot be removed
Can anyone help

Also, this prevents me from upgrading my operating system to Windows XP

If no advice offered here, better to ask the experts who hang out at
microsoft.public.sqlserver.msde

Did you go in and stop the services via Administrative Tools

since this is a service that creates dependencies, you can't simply uninstall it
