Remove password from Word File

I have added a password to a Word document (docx) to open it. I now want to remove that password i.e. freely open it without having to enter the password but I cannot seem to do this.

How are you going about attempting to remove the password & exactly what
does "cannot seem to do this" mean? How did you protect the document? Did
you apply a password to *open*, a password to *modify* or *both*? What
does/does not occur when you try to remove it?

It's also useful to state the exact version of OS X & Office any time you
post an issue.

Hi Bob,
So I go to Word-Preferences-Security then enter a password into the Password to Open dialogue box. I then save the document. When I open the document it asks me for the password. This is as I expected. Now I want to remove the password i.e. open the document without being asked for a password. So I go back to Word-Preferences-Security and delete the password in the Password to Open dialogue box. I click OK and then save the document (have also tried closing without saving). When I try to reopen the document it once again asks for the password.

OK - this appears to be something a little buggy in Word 2008. If you don't
make any other changes the doc isn't being recognized as having been
"dirtied" when you simply delete the password. As a result - even though you
click the Save button or Command+S - the doc doesn't actually get saved
because deleting the pw isn't being considered a change.

It's an easy enough work around though. Make any kind of a change - like
type then delete a space [but don't use Undo], in addition to removing the
pw. That will cause the save to be effective in removing the pw.

Please use Help> Send Feedback to report this... I don't know if it's been
noticed before. I'll also file a bug report with MacBU.
