There is nothing in Excel that would cause anything like what you've briefly
described to occur by default. It would have to explicitly have been created
by someone working in the file. With no more detail than you've provided
though there are only 2 possibilities that come to mind.
The first is that someone has added some sort of graphic or text to the
Header or Footer being used for the sheet. This would show up in Print
Layout View & when the sheet is printed, but not display in Normal View. To
remove it go to File> Page Setup> Header & Footer, then either use a
different Header/Footer, delete the content from the selected H/F, or choose
to use no H/F.
It's also possible that graphic content as a Background. In that case it
would be visible in both Print Layout & Normal View but does not print. To
remove it go to Format> Sheet> Delete Background.
