Remove Red Asterisk from Data Validation

I have a field which I have added some data validation to, however, when I
preview the form the red asterisk appears in the text field. The field is
not required but if the user fills it in I am trying to control the data that
is submitted to the DB. Is there a way to use the validation without getting
the red asterisk?
