remove shading on side of page

I have a file that was converted to word 2007 which resulted in a vertical
shading on about 1/4 of the page. I have looked everywhere and am unable to
find or remove the shading. Any suggestions?

The shading is probably the area reserved for "balloons" when Track Changes
is enabled.

That may be the markup area highlight, which means there are tracked changes
or comments in the document. Accept/reject the tracked changes and delete
the comments to get rid of the highlight area.

You can also choose not to show the highlight area by removing its checkmark
in the show markup dropdown. You can control the width of the highlight area
in track changes options, and eliminate it by setting balloon use to never.
But these settings only apply when the file is open on your computer.
