Removing a theme background

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I tried one of the "theme" backgrounds and decided I didn't like it. How can I make it go away. I have trived format>slide layout>selected solid black but I still have a colored strip across the top of each slide. How do I get rid of it. Thanks.
