removing commas from numbers

I am trying to enter information into R, an open-source statistical program. Unfortunately, it does not recognize items with commas as numbers. Excel automatically enters commas for numbers with 4 digits. How do I turn it off?

I don't understand - if you're trying to enter information into R, just
don't use the commas, right?

The General format in XL doesn't include commas by default.
