Removing Double Spacing in Word 2002

N

Neil

I have always been able to type "normal" letters in Word with single spacing.
For some unknown reason, it now is double spacing everything, including
envelopes. I have tried the instructions under "help" in the program, and
have also tried the suggestion that was offered in a post on this board from
2007. Neither of these have eliminated the problem.

Thanks for any help,
Neil

Create a new blank document (for example by pressing Ctrl+N). Click Format |
Styles and Formatting. In the task pane, right-click Normal and choose
Modify from the context menu. Click the Format button and then click
Paragraph. On the Indents and Spacing tab, make sure that Line Spacing is
set to "Single" and that Spacing Before and After are both set to zero.
Click OK. Before clicking OK to close the Modify Style dialog box, select
"Add to template." If/when you are prompted to save the Normal template,
choose to do so.

Stefan - thanks for your help. I had previously tried this, but I tried it
again, after reading your post. I still have the double spacing. Any other
ideas?

It seems as if you are being prevented from saving changes to normal.dot.
You may want to investigate if there is a poorly designed add-in installed
on your machine.

As a quick fix you could open the Normal template as a document (via File |
Open) and modify the style directly in the template. When you are done, save
and close Normal.

Have yu checked to see if you simply need to switch the paragraph format
from double-spaced to single-space?

If you havenb't stored a lot of macros in the normal template, or have them
backed up, then you could simply search the disk for normal.dot. Sometimes
people end up with more than one so search the whole disk.
Delete normal.dot. All of them. Personally, I just rename them
normal.OLD so I can stil open them and copy any macros etc. I want to get
back from them. The rename is the same as deleting to Word; it won't find
the renamed files.
Close and restart Word. Word will create a new normal.dot in the right
folder for you, set to defaults. That will have single spacing unless you
change it.

If that doesn't work, then something else is happening as in maybe a Word
malware. Let us know how it goes.

HTH,

Twayne
