Removing hyperlinks

I have a large table document with several thousand hyperlinks in it. Is there any way to remove them other than one at a time?

How you accomplish this will depend on what you actually want to do:

1. Do you want to unlink the hyperlinks? If so, you can follow Greg's
directions (Ctrl+A, Ctrl+Shift+F9), but that will unlink *all* fields, so
don't do that if you have other fields in the document.*

2. Do you just want to remove the hyperlink formatting? Ctrl+Spacebar will
remove the Hyperlink character style, but again this requires selecting all
the hyperlinks selectively since you presumably don't want to remove all
direct formatting in the document. But you can change the Hyperlink
character style to be Auto color and not underlined.

3. Do you actually want to remove the hyperlinks entirely? If so, use Find
and Replace. In the "Find what" box, type

^19 HYPERLINK

Leave the "Replace with" box blank. Replace All. In order to make this work,
you must have the field codes displayed, so first press Alt+F9 to display
them.

*Here's a trick for finding all the hyperlinks and unlinking them: Display
the field codes and search for them as in (3) above, but instead of using
Replace All, click Find Next, then Ctrl+Shift+F9. Then close the Find dialog
and use the buttons below the vertical scroll bar (which have now become
Find Next and Find Previous). Click the Find Next button, then press F4
(which will repeat the Ctrl+Shift+F9 action), click Find Next, press F4.
Continue until you don't find any more.

Yes, this is tedious, but not as tedious as doing the job entirely manually.
What's really annoying is that on the Find tab of the Find and Replace
dialog, there is an option to "Highlight all items found," which will select
all the hyperlinks in the document. Unfortunately, if you then press
Ctrl+Shift+F9, it unlinks only the first one selected. <sigh>
