Removing link formatting?

How can I remove the formatting that is automatically applied when I type
out a web address? The underline and blue text color that is added to
indicate that it is a link. I am using Word 2004.

You could use the AutoFormat smart button. Every time you type out a URL or
an e-mail address, you'll notice that as this text string gets changed into
a hyperlink, a short, blue line at the beginning of the word appears. Move
your mouse cursor to that line, and a smart button will show up. Click on
that button and choose "Undo hyperlink".

If you want to turn that feature off for good, do as follows.
1) Tools>AutoCorrect.
2) Switch to "AutoFormat as you type".
3) Uncheck "Internet Paths with Hyperlinks" in the "Replace as you type"
section.

Just a PS. This will both change the formatting and make it not a link
anymore. If for some reason you want the link, but not that formatting,
post back and ask for those directions.

To leave the hyperlink, but remove the formatting, choose
Format/Style...

In the styles box, choose the Hyperlink character format (choose "All
Styles" from the "List" dropdown if it's not visible). Click Modify.

Select "underlying properties" from the "Style based on" dropdown.

Select "Font" from the "Format" dropdown. Choose "Automatic" from the
"Font Color" dropdown. Choose "none" from the "Underline style". Click
OK.

If you'd like future documents to have this (lack of) format, check the
"Apply to template" checkbox. Click OK.

Repeat with the "Followed Hyperlink" character style if desired.
