removing masters from template document stencil

I'm using MS Visio 2002 SR1

I have a template file which I'm opening as original. The template has
1 stencil associated, but I've noticed that the Document Stencil of
the template also contains 3 unwanted masters. They don't correspond
to masters in the other stencil, though 2 of them share the same name.

I'm trying to delete these 3 but I seem unable to do so. The only
options which aren't greyed out are 'copy' & 'paste'.
I've also tried to remove them via automation with a python script but
this fails too:- I get

com_error: (-2147352567, 'Exception occurred.', (0, 'Microsoft Visio',
'\n\nRequested operation is presently disabled.', None, 0,
-2032465766), None)

There's only 1 page in the template, and it doesn't have any shapes on
it either.

What gives ?

cheers

To my knowledge, commands for deleting masters are only disabled if the
stencil is opened as Read-Only. This is not possible for the Document
Stencil, so I don't know why the masters cannot be deleted. You can try
going through the Document Explorer to see if that works. Otherwise, you
can save your file as XML and manually remove the masters from the file.
