Removing objects like flags

In Excel 2003 I would transfer data from a web based database for work to an excel spread sheet in order to manipulate the data. The data would appear with lots of little objects like flags and circles. I would click on the white arrow in the task bar, highlight the whole spreadsheet, hit delete and all those objects would go away. Then I would copy everything over into another sheet and be able to sort without being impeded by these "objects." How do I do this in Excel2007?
