Removing Office 97 after Installing Office XP

I have Office 97 installed on my laptop but have been running Office XP2002 since April 02. Recently I tried to free some space on my HD by removing Office 97. I was surprised to find that Office XP didn't work after I did this. What am I doing wrong? I can't believe that I need two different Office suites installed on my laptop

I had to repair outlook after removing office 97. I mistakenly installed
office 2003 w/o removing 97 first. I think that this may be your issue also,
need to do a repair install.
watch out for the office 97 findfast.exe staying and not working.
mso97.dll ended up being the only part of fastfind that was removed.
