Removing page number inserted from menu

Two questions:
1: How do you remove a page number inserted in the
running heading/footing from the insert/pagenumber menu?
Once it is there I cannot delete it?

2:The reason for my question above is that I am cnverting
sm Word Perfect documents. They apparently contained som
page codes, thus a converted document insists on starting
page numbering at 64. The only place it shows up is in
the above menu (and of course on the display at the
bottom of the window where it says Page 64 ... 1/14. So I
would like to change the page numbering scheme to
continous - and the only place to do that is in the
Insert/page nuber menu under "format", but I do not want
the page number inserted by this function - I want to use
my own fields. Do you have any suggestions as to how I
should do?

Suzanne,
Thanks for your reply. It was a good reference,
unfortunately it did not work for my question number 2,
because the Word Perfect convrter does not put in the
page number as the Insert/Page Number menu does.

So I ended up converting the document to RTF format. The
I edited it with Notepad - searching for "pgnst". There
will be two hits. In the first case you remove
the "/Pgnstart xx" where xx the starting page number you
want to remove. In the second case there is a Pgnreset
and a Pgnstart commmand that you want to remove. Then you
open the rtf document with word and save as a regular
word document. Sigh! It would be nice if Word came with a
better user interface that actually allowed one to edit
all what was in there.

It is perfectly possible to edit the headers and footers in any Word
document (View | Header and Footer or double-click in the header/footer area
in Print Layout view); you asked about Insert | Page Numbers, so that's what
I answered. If the page number is in the header/footer, it is much easier.
The problem is usually that the conversion has resulted in zillions of
section breaks, giving you zillions of headers and footers (usually *not*
Same as Previous). If you start by removing all the section breaks (Find ^b
and Replace with nothing), the task will be much easier.

You have to go into View - Footer/Header, click on the
first page fotter/header and delete it.
