Removing Resource from multi-resource task

M

Mike Kleiman

I have a task that has 4 people allocated at 25% each. Planned work is 100
hours for each resource and they have all tracked 25 hours of actual work on
the task. Resource-a got moved to a special assignment on another project and
needs to be removed from this task. I want to retain resource-a's actuals and
have the remaining planned work redistributed to the other three resources at
33% each. In general, how should this be done?

Thanks

Select Window, split then select the task form in the lower pane and
right-mouse click and select Resource Work. Now set remaining work for the
resource to zero and make sure Actual work reflects what they have already
done. Give the remaining work you removed to the other resources.

Hi Rod,

I tried using the Remove button in the Assign Resources dialog box, but the
result is the loss of all work performed by the resource. I would think the
expected behaviour of the Remove button would be to remove that resource from
working on the resource from that point moving forward. I am not sure why
the Remove button removes previous work.

In any event, I just open the task pane and set the remaining work of the
resource I want to stop working on the task and pass there remaining work to
others.

Please advise if you have any insight on the Remove button in the Assign
Resources dialog.

Thanks,
glenn

Rod already told you to set the Remaining Work to 0h for the resource. He
said absolutely nothing about using the Remove button in the Assign
Resources dialog! As you have discovered, using the Remove button does not
handle your situation, so there's no point in debating why it doesn't work.
The Remove button completely REMOVES a resource from a task, even if the
resource has Actual Work on the task. You should only use the Remove button
in the Assign Resources dialog if a resource has no Actual Work. Hope this
helps.

Hi all,

First, I hold great value in the discussions held on this forum and I thank
everyone for their insight. I only hope to begin to help others as I have
been guided and I am certain in doing so, that my edge will become sharper in
the process.

I was not attempting to debate the behaviour of the Remove button in the
Assign Resources dialog but I am a bit puzzled as to why anyone would apply a
resource to a task only to remove them before they ever do any work.

A couple points...

1) I have split the Gantt to show the Task Window and I remove remaining
work for a resource and take their work and apply it to a different resource
and this works Ok.

2) I have removed a resource against a task and then removed them prior to
putting them to work and it works fine. It just seems a little pointless.

Please excuse me if I am missing the picture somehow.
