Removing "Same As Previous" tag from footer causes Word to crash

While trying to modify a document, part of which requires removing a "Same As
Previous" tag from an existing footer, causes Word to crash. When looking at
the errors while trying to recover the document, I see one that says
"Internal Data Integrity (Type 4)".

Any help would be appreciated.
