removing shortcut icon on desktop

S

Sam

I just updated my Office XP Service Pack from SP1 to SP2.
After I installed the SP2 for Office, it placed a
shortcut item on the desktop. I wanted to delete it, but
an error message appeared, as shown below.

--Confirm delete--
Are you sure you want to delete the Microsoft Outlook
shorcut item on the desktop?

The Outlook icon on the desktop provides some special
functionality and we recommend that you do not remove it.
-------------------

Can I remove it safely and what special functionality
does it provide? I never use Outlook and I use a
different email client. I would like to remove it if it's
possible without problems.

You can remove it safely. The functionality it provides can be accessed
through other methods, and you can always restore the shortcut later if
you decide you'd like it back (instructions can be found in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base).
