Removing SP3 from Office XP

I recently received a newly built developer laptop where I work. The
corporate standard is to use Office XP2, but the build that I received
included SP3. This causes problems in other applications, including Visual
Studio, and applications we have built which reference Office DLLs.

I have tried uninstalling Office completely, and then reinstalling the base
product, without any service pack. But when I check versions after the
install is done, it is still showing up as SP3. I'm guessing some files or
registry settings are being left behind, even after uninstalling Office. It
just seems to pick them up again after reinstalling.

I have read that Office XP SP3 cannot be removed, and I have read that the
only way to remove it is by uninstalling Office and then reinstalling the
desired version (which didn't work, as mentioned above).

Can anyone suggest how to fix this, short of rebuilding the entire machine?

Thanks!

If the build you received included SP3 as part of the build, it can't be
removed.

Tom,

The build of the workstation did originally contain SP3. We were hoping
that uninstalling Office XP completely, and then reinstalling without any
service packs would resolve the issues. That doesn't appear to be the case
though.

I'm guessing the only solution now would be to rebuild the entire laptop,
without SP3.
