Removing templates that come with Word 2007

How do I remove (or hide) the templates that come standard in Word 2007? I
have a complete library of all the templates I use and would never use the
majority of the ones that come with Word. I have my template folders set up
to appear as tabs in New, but these extras take up too much space and I'm
always clicking on More. Thank you!

If 2007 is like previous versions (back to Word 2000), you have to rerun
setup and uninstall them.

Unless there's something I am missing, this is no longer possible - and in
fact as Word 2007 uses a system of recent templates under the Office button/
File New, it was not something that had previously concerned me. Word 2007
is very much a theme driven application like eg Publisher.

As with previous recent versions removing the associated files from their
folder does not in fact remove the templates from the application. Unless
someone comes up with something different, I think it is no longer possible
to remove the supplied templates, and if you are using the old New Document
or Template dialog, you appear to be stuck with them.

I don't see any built-in, or installed, templates in the New dialog box (or
I guess I should say the old New dialog box.). All I see are my templates
and the link to open it reads "My Templates" which implies they shouldn't be
there.

If you add the command New Document or Template to the QAT, do you not have
a raft of templates under such tabs as Faxes, Letters, Other Documents,
Reports and Resumes?
These are the same templates as you can access from Office Button > New >
Installed Templates?
If not - how do you get rid of them?

The New dialog box when displayed from the New Document dialog, when you
click the My Templates link, doesn't include built-in templates. But yes, if
I add it to my QAT then I see them. Interesting.

That's rather bad news. In Word 2002/2003, I copied all the
Microsoft-supplied templates to subfolders of my user templates folder named
Microsoft Templates, Microsoft Merge Templates, and Microsoft Wizards, then
uninstalled them (at some point I somehow acquired a Legal Pleadings tab
that contains only the Pleading Wizard--don't know how that happened!). I
don't use these at all, just keep them for reference when assisting users,
and I don't have to bother with those tabs. I would be annoyed if I had to
put up with all the tabs originally created for these templates since I have
eight of my own tabs.

I'm not certain they can't be removed. The installed templates don't bother
me so I don't try to remove them.

I did find the folder they are stored in and moved them out of the folder,
BUT they are still listed in both dialog boxes. If you use the New dialog
box then and select a template that has been moved, Word will install it.

But that was the behavior in previous versions as well. You couldn't just
delete or move the templates; you had to rerun setup to uninstall them (set
them to Not Available).

I agree there is no such option, but all is not lost. The 'My Templates' tab
in Office Button > New gives your templates dialog exactly as it did in
Word 2003 with its installable templates removed. However there is another
option 'Installed Templates' which lists the installed and apparently
irremovable installed templates and a tool that combines them which can be
added to the QAT which produces the Word 2003-like dialog but with all the
installed templates added to tabs.

There is no option to call the My Templates dialog from the QAT and I cannot
see a way to do so with vba, however it doesn't matter as the New... command
which can be used to replace the New on the QAT (much as it could on the
standard toolbar in Word 2003) throws up the File New dialog box where you
can have all your recent templates displayed as (large) thumbails.

If anything this is preferable to the old dialog provided you don't have a
seriously large number of templates to work with.

That was my assessment as well. It takes two clicks, provided you add New...
to the QAT, to display the New dialog box that contains that your templates.
And with the advantage of the recently used templates you may not need to
use the link for My Templates. I've found it fairly convenient - far better
than the New task pane in previous versions.

That's why I didn't realize you had the old New dialog box added to your
QAT. ;-)
