Removing the Font Cache Tool, does it help?

I have removed the Font Cache Tool since Office 2004. Office 2008 hid
it a bit better, but I still found it, removed it and now startup is a
tad faster - but still way slower than, say, Photoshop CS3 or even the
notoriously slow starter Illustrator CS3.

Would be nice if we had a solution for this. Word 2008 starts in 65
seconds! My PeeZee geek colleagues just grin ...

Well, Microsoft is working on performance issues, particularly at startup. However, some of the improvements are waiting on updates from Apple before they can work.

Removing the Font Cache Tool just disables Word's ability to update the Font menu, and slows down its handling of fonts when working in a document. Is that really what you wanted to do?

I sincerely wish someone could nail the performance issue once & for all,
but it seems to be so inconsistent that it's difficult to isolate any single
cause. On my PM G5 dual 2GHz, 1.5 MB running 10.4.11 it takes about 5
seconds from click of the Dock icon to fully launched & on my MBP 2.4GHz
Intel, 2 MB it's approximately 15 seconds.

If you're experiencing 65 second startup I can't help but think there must
be something specific to your situation that's contributing to the delay.
Unfortunately I have no idea what that "something" might be other than the
numerous possibilities hinted at throughout the newsgroup threads.

P.S. - I neglected to mention that the MBP is running Leopard 10.5.0 - have
not updated to 10.5.2 as yet.
