How do I turn off the option that places a dot (bullet) in my document everytime I hit the space bar?

Click the Paragraph button on your toolbar (reversed "P") next to "zoom".

The Show/Hide ¶ mark, contrary to popular belief, does not toggle between
display and nondisplay of nonprinting characters. It toggles between display
of *all* NPC and those you have checked on the View tab of Tools | Options.
It sounds as if you must have "Spaces" checked there. For more, see
