Hi Lexie,

What you did was click on the Show/Hide formatting button, otherwise known
as a pilcrow (backwards paragraph mark, ¶), on your toolbar. Those hidden
formatting characters you're seeing can come in very handy at times, but all
you have to do to get rid of them is click again on the pilcrow symbol.

Actually, the pilcrow button is a very gross way to toggle formatting
characters on and off, and I advise against using it. You surely want to
be able to see *some* formatting characters - for example, if you can't
see the paragraph characters at the end of paragraphs, you can't use
Word properly at all. Choose Word > Preferences > View to select the
exact set of formatting characters you want to see; for example, you can
turn off visibility of spaces between words as dots, but leave the
paragraph marks at the end of paragraphs in place. m.

I think I recorded that process into a macro to have an icon to turn on
everything except spaces--because the spaces are very distracting, but the
paragraph marks are very helpful. No, I lie, I didn't make a macro--though
that should be possible. Word actually has a predefined command to show
only paragraph marks (ShowPara), and I keep that handy on my toolbar.

And by the way, Lexie, you may also have hit the keyboard shortcut to toggle
show/hide--cmd-7--easier to accidentally do than click an icon, probably.

What can I say? Some of us are incorrigible in this regard. I HATE seeing
hidden characters until I need/want them. I typically work with Show/Hide
completely off and have no problem using the pilcrow button when necessary
:).

And some of us are just incorrigible, period.

Hmmm... I *never* turn hidden characters off, including spaces.

:) Stick around. You'll learn lots more here. I learned Pilcrow on this
newsgroup from either Elliott Roper or Clive Huggan. Can't remember which.

Cheers,

Neither can I, Beth -- just put it down to a couple of cultured Aussies!
(Elliott is so cultured he uses it as a verb, as in "Well, I'll be
pilcrowed!")

It is a lovely, ancient word...
