Removing watermarks

Using Word 2003, I have a watermark diagonally across the middle of the page.
I am trying to remove it. Have tried the Format|Background|Printed
watermark|No watermark and the darn thing won't go away. Can't see anything
to do with watermards in the header. Can anyone help me?

Open the header pane. Click on the watermark to select it (this works only
when the header is open) and press Delete.

A watermark is really nothing more than a graphic anchored in the header
(http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/AnchorToHeader.htm). The code in the
Format > Background > Printed Watermark command, though, sometimes can't see
existing watermarks.

I had the same problem, and everyone telling me to go to Headers and remove
the watermark. The thing they DIDN'T say was that the header appears to be
empty, so I remained confused. There was, however, a paragraph mark. I just
deleted the paragraph mark, and lo and behold, the silly watermark
disappeared! I guess it was easier to see since I show all formatting marks
in Word,

The watermark is anchored to the paragraph. Once you are in the header pane,
you can select the watermark directly and delete it.
