Renamed and relinked file shows old name

Ken

I am using a master resource pool and creating ad-hoc
project files to get a better look at all the projects at
one time. I either create the file when I open the
resource pool or use the open option from the shared
resources dialog.

I renamed two projects to better represent the working
names of the projects, however the original name shows up
as the title of the embeded project. I did break the link
and relink the project before renaming the file so the
name in the shared resourced summary shows the correct,
renamed file.

I updated the project properties summary in an effort to
correct the issue with no change.

The project name is correct in the project field when
exported. Where am I missing this change.

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this
problem

Ken,
Lemme guess, you're using Project 98 or 2000, correct? This little
anomaly was recently discussed in other posts on this newsgroup. Take a
look at the thread of posts in this newsgroup started by Cheryl on
6/30/04 with a subject of "Inserted Projects".

Hope this helps.

So is this a "bug-feature" or is there something I can
change? It appears from the post that it is an unresolved
issue or did I miss something?

Thanks for the direction!

Nothing you can do.
Simply type in the correct name for it and forget about it until it comes
time to insert another renamed project.

I'm using Project 2003 and having the same anomaly. To avoid the
problem, instead of renaming projects, recreate them as follows:
1. Disconnect from Resource Pool (make SURE they are disconnected,
they seem to want to reconnect like lizards regrow tails)
2. Save the file under it's new name.
3. Close both, delete or move the old name file.
4. Open the new name file and the RP (read/write) and reconnect with
the RP.
5. Check in the RP to make sure it's connected.
Best of luck.

Ken,
It is definitely a "feature", not a "bug". It's sole purpose appears to
be fodder for keeping users and MVPs alike in a bewildered state. I used
to be in Arizona but now I'm in bewildered :)

The name of a project is confusing, all right.

There's the filename and then there's the Project name from the properties
dialog box in the file menu. When you insert a project into a master file
or see it referred to in the task list on the consolidation that MSP builds
for resource pools, etc, the name is coming from the Project Name field, not
the filename. When you create the file, the Project name defaults to the
filename. When you subsequently change the filename from inside Project
with File, SaveAs, the project name tracks the change as well and becomes
the new filename. BUT, if you change the filename outside of Project, for
instance using file rename in Windows Explorer, the Project name in the file
properties does NOT change and remains the old filename. And just to make
it more interesting, if when you explicitly change the Project name to
override the default of the filename, that locks it in and it now will not
change when the filename changes due to a File SaveAs in Project. Once you
have entered something in that field other than the default it becomes
"sticky" and will be retained regardless of filename changes unless you
again explicitly edit the field.

Steve,
Wow, that's the best explanation I've seen yet although I'm not sure it
holds for all versions of Project (i.e. Project 98 and 2000 seem to act
differently than 2002 and 2003). The reason I say this is because I have
a file whose filename is "TInsert-4, and project name, "TInsert-2" but
when inserted (Project 98 or 2000) shows as "TInsert-2A". I don't recall
ever changing the filename other than via File/Save As.

As I say, bewildering.

Hi,

Just to add to the confusion:
Changing the Title property through VBA doesn't stick at all. You have to
reset
Activeproject.projectsummarytask.name
which in turn will change the Title property.
