I've been requested to change the name of a resources that already has hours
booked against it. Can this be done without afftecing any prior or current
project plans?

Yes, you can do this safely with no adverse affects to hours booked against
tasks by this resource. Simply open the Enterprise Resource Pool, check out
the resource in question, rename the resource, and then save and close the
Enterprise Resource Pool. Please note, however, that the changes to the
resource name will not populate completely in PWA until the following has
been done:

1. The new name for the resource will not appear in detailed Project views
in PWA until the managers of each project publish the latest schedule
changes for projects using this resource. Therefore, your PM's should open
each of the relevant projects and click either Collaborate - Publish -
Project Plan or Collaborate - Publish - All Information.

2. The new name for the resource will not appear in Portfolio Anlayzer
views in PWA until the next time the system rebuilds the OLAP cube.

Hope this helps.

In addition please note that the replies you've gotten apply to resources
using Windows Auth, not Project Server auth. Also, the new name will not be
reflected in existing SharePoint workspaces, ever, unless you either change
this manually site-by-site or write a SQL query to do it.
