Renaming office document gives folder not accessible error when sa

Hi,

We have Word 2000 and Win XP home. After renaming a Word or excel document
and attempting to save on a network shared folderI get the error message -
The folder \\xxxxx isn't accessible. The folder may be located on an
unavailable volume or protected with a password.

The folder is available and is not protected.
This fault seemed to start suddenly a week ago with no apparent cause.
Wordpad can save to the same folder without error.

I have tried the following:
Repair Word
Reinstall Word
Deleting the data and option keys in the registry
Mapping the path to a drive letter
Removing the Norton AV 2004 office plug-in
Full AV scan with up to date definitions.
Uninstalled Norton AV.

Office does allow a file to be renamed when saving to the 'my documents'
folder on the local hard drive.

I have used both the 'list' view and our usual 'details' view in the save as
dialog box.

Any ideas will be appreciated

Thanks
Darren

Is this saving to a Windows 9x machine? If so, see the following.

Subject: MS05-011 Security Update breaks saving from Excel and Word to
Windows 9x shared folder

This issue is under investigation for a possible fix, but since you may see
reports of it in the newsgroups, I wanted to provide the details.

The MS05-11 security update for Windows XP and Windows 2000 will cause
saving files from Excel and Word (versions 2000 and 2002 are verified) to
fail with an error ("The folder <name> isn't accessible..."). Windows is
evaluating a fix, but for now only the workarounds listed below are
available.

1. Save the file locally then move it to the Windows 98 machine.
2. Another possible workaround is to do the following:
When you type the name, use the tab key to move focus to the cancel button
and then click on Save.
OR
Click on CANCEL, hold down the mouse and then move the mouse off the cancel
button, then let go of the mouse button) and then click on Save.
4. Upgrade Windows 98 to either Windows 2000 or Windows XP

Obviously, none of these are great workarounds
