renaming published project files

What is the best practice for renaming published project files on
project server that contain illegal characters in their file names?
The process that I think may work is:

1. Make sure that all pending task updates are accepted.
2. Publish all updates.
3. Save the project locally.
4. Delete the project on the server.
5. Copy the local project to a new acceptable file name.
6. Import the renamed project to the project server.

Is this method correct? Are there any additional steps needed?

Any help on this matter would be most appreciated!

The Project Renamer Tool is not an option at this point. I am seeking
a manual method of doing the same thing.

Mark:

Your procedure is sound, but the renaming step can happen on import. You'll
also need to make sure you don't delete the SharePoint content if you have
any.

Gary,

Won't the Sharepoint site still contain the Old site's name if he follows
this method and doesn't re-create the sharepoint site?

Gary,

Once the renamed project is published, will the timesheet view on the
team members side be updated with the new name?

Thanks,
Mark
