renaming recipient, - error - now can't edit any rec. info

So I need to chage the case of one letter of a recipient
field, click 'rename' (maybe should just be edit), change
case to upper of one letter, get message to effect 'field
already exists w/that name', so I delete some letters,
okay that, go back and change case to upper retyping
deleted letters.. Get a message about something, lost
data, etc etc.. ???

Now when I go back in to the recipients, the Edit button
is grayed out...

Have restarted Word, and re associated the data file..
