renaming the word file comes with an error message

whenever i try to rename the word file , it come sup with an error message
that if will do it the file will be unusable.Last time it happened i
contacted with the Microsoft and they did some changes in the control panel
..but now i forgot the changes they did.and now again the same problem has
come up.CAn you please guide me in this regard

If you have file extensions displayed (that is, if you are seeing
Filename.doc instead of just Filename) and try to rename the file without
the .doc extension, you will get this message. If you don't have file
extensions displayed, you won't have to worry about it. Although it is far
preferable (for a number of reasons) to retain the display of file
extensions, you can make the change in Windows Control Panel | Folder
Options | View: "Hide file extensions for known file types."
